I bought the PC version of Sleeping Dogs on a whim because I was hearing good things about it and I’m happy to tell you that it is in fact absolutely wonderful.

It features a mix of the free roaming GTA trademark exploration set in a seldom used Hong Kong setting, which I think gives it that edge of much needed interest in open world games, with fast paced crime action shenanigans. The environments are rich with colour, feel populated to the level of believability and pretty are damn sexy looking, which is certainly true after installing the HD texture pack. It reminds me of games like Shenmue or Yakuza to be precise, which is high praise indeed. Even Mafia II springs to mind which, in the end was an overall disappointment still made a lasting impression because the attention to detail was some of the highest I’ve ever seen in a video game.

I’ve found the hand to hand combat to be pretty hard so far, it’s challenging but not frustrating and I’d compare it to that of Batman Arkham Asylum/City stick and move hitting, with varied take downs and is just as fast and brutal in comparison. These Chinese martial artist folks don’t mess around and I’ve had my arse handed to me a few times already outside the tutorial.

I wasn’t sure about this for a long time but I’m glad I took the leap into this fantastic world. The story so far is what you would expect from the genre, with great voice acting coupled with decent animation to back it up.

I highly recommend this game because it feels like a breath of fresh air in terms of setting and I can’t wait to play some more. If you want to know more about it please don’t hesitate to drop me a message.
